AmazonBasics Standby UPS 800VA 450W Surge Protector Battery Backup

All i wanted was a battery backup for my work’s desktop computer so that when the power went out for a few seconds, i wouldn’t lose all my work. So i bought this despite the negative reviews because even if all i got was power for 10 seconds, it would make a world of difference for those one second power blips. I plugged in my desktop and two 27′ monitors into the battery backup slots and let it charge overnight. So this morning (~18 hours later) i decided to pull the plug and give the system a test. I ran youtube videos in the background and kept opening and closing programs autocad and revit programs in the background. The computer and both monitors ran for 16 mins and 6 seconds before losing power. With the reviews i had read, i thought i’d get 10-60 seconds. But 16 minutes of power backup.

Some of the reviews here seem to be misleading in stating that you need to restart the unit after a power outage. This may be the case if the battery gets completely drained, but i just tested it briefly after receiving it and it switched back to mains after power was restored, judging by the warning beeps stopping. So for power outages where the battery does not get completely drained, you do not need to restart or reset the ups, it switches back to mains automatically.

Update aug 2020: the original battery only lasted 13 months. Worse yet, there is no indication it won’t work when needed. For starters, the mac software you download from amazon is the old version (1. 09) and it will just tell you ‘lost communication. ‘ if you have high sierra (macos 10. 13 or higher), you have to go to the cyberpower web site to download powerpanel 1. Once you’ve done that, the software and the led light on the ups indicate everything is normal, the load is only about 60%, and i should have a runtime of about 10 minutes. Until you try the battery test.

Got it setup and its working as it should. We will see how the longevity of it is, but for now its doing good. Don’t write negative reviews because you don’t understand how power consumption works. Do your research before purchasing something like this, or else you may not have an understanding of power consumption like another review on here.

Using it to back up my network (cable modem, file server, router and switches). My setup draws a 10% load as reported by the ups’s software. At this load it will last about an hour which is more than enough to do a graceful shutdown of the sever and network equipment.

Tips for Sizing Your UPS

  • In order to have your UPS run properly, your UPS has to be large enough to support all of the equipment you plan to plug in
  • Find the capacity you need by calculating the load of your connected equipment. The load is the combined amount of power each of the devices use.
  • To find the load you need, make an equipment list, including the total watts each piece of equipment requires to run properly.
  • Add together all of the wattage needed for your connected equipment. The wattage for the UPS needs to be higher than the combined wattage of all of your connected equipment.
