Disclaimer: paid full price for this product, thereby certifying “zero” bias whatsoever. We’ve had this ups for a couple of months now. We have it connected to our baby monitor (which shuts off when power goes out; imagine walking into the room with the baby sleeping just to turn on the baby monitor. Especially if the baby is a light sleeper)i have tested it a couple of times by unplugging it from the wall outlet and it does work. Here is the reason why i am giving it 3 stars: there is a light constant humming sound coming from it. Curious if others have this as well.
I hesitated in even providing a review simply because of the great experience i have with apc and i didn’t want to diminish the typical quality of products i’ve enjoyed from apc. However, it’s only fair to share my experience because it was actually 5 star as a whole. I bought this ups for a remote network (security cameras and poe switch) in my home. When i got it, total failure; it simply would not start. I ran up to a brick and mortar and bought another one because i needed it that day. Since i also needed a replacement ups for our phone system, this situation was not critical, it would just accelerate that replacement to when i got the replacement for this bad ups. I notified apc (schneider electric per instructions shipped with that bad ups) via their ‘chat’ interface. With fewer than 8 messages, schneider scheduled a fedex shipment of a replacement ups. I received that replacement ups on the second day, plugged it into the phone system and life was good. That new ups replaced a 10 year old apc device that had served us well.
While this apc ups looks like many of their other versions, but just a smaller capacity, they have stripped out most of the valuable features. First, the build quality is similar to their other units. No real complaints with outlets, cable length, or overall physical design. The usb port found on most of their other units is simply not present. While some features are reprogrammable, the interface, apc overloads the single power button for all functions, and is absurd. I’m sure it works as the manual describes, but i came the conclusion i’m never going to mess with it. While they could have easily facilitated a replaceable battery, it seems they purposely made the battery fixed, using security screws down a long narrow shaft is sending a loud message. What this means are that these units are essentially disposable. For my purposes, i’m battery backing up one single 10-watt device. If the battery fails within 3 years (these batteries normally last around 4-5), then the good news is that you’re covered by the warranty, and you’ll likely get a completely new unit. Maybe i’ll mess around with it and replace the battery myself when the time comes.

Does a separate battery need to be purchased with this UPS?
No, the BE425M ships in ready-to-use condition. No other purchases are required.
Can I plug my laser printer into a UPS?
Due to the large amount of power used by laser printers, APC does not recommend connecting them to a UPS below 1500VA. If laser printers are connected, it may cause the UPS to transfer to battery repeatedly, exhausting the battery unnecessarily
