Worked as expected: i turned it on, connected the usb cable to synology nas, which instantly recognized it. After charging the battery, i unplugged it from the power outlet and all my devices (network gear + synology nas) continued to work. Synology software correctly detected ‘safe mode’ and shut itself down after 10 minutes. The network router and modem can go on for way over an hour, so a power outage won’t leave me without internet for quite some time. This ups emits high-pitched noise, aka ‘coil whine’ of varying frequency, going line ‘bzzzzz-click-bzzzzz-click’. Based on what others are saying, this is to be expected, and it’s acceptable in my case because it’s located in a home lab closet. I wouldn’t want this near my desk where the primary workstation is, the noise would drive me absolutely nuts.

When i had all of my computer equipment (nas, computer, router, modem phone and printer) connected it showed it gave me 15 minutes of life during a power failure. I now only have my nas connected which i use for data storage and is the highest priority. It hold’s all my data and desktop backups, etc. I now have 1 hour and 20 minutes of life. I do like the fact it has a surge protector side and the ups side. My other devices are plugged into the surge protector side now. My nas automatically detected it. I have it to shut down after 30 minutes just in case it is a brief outage.

Apc is the best in the battery back-up category. These are simple to install and configure. They are also far superior to the basic surge power strip/battery backup. Spend a few extra dollars for peace of mind. I use a number of these on macs. The mac os has battery management software integrated with the os which works beautifully.

I used apc ups devices at work for many years. This new generation backup and surge protector has very good protection features and is easy to set up. (you have to connect the battery before using it)i haven’t needed tech support so i couldn’t rate it.

I use this on my security cameras and internet modem. Once the unit was fully charged i switched off my main power and tested it out. I had 1:45 min before the unit was out of battery. For reference it is powering 8 cameras and a cable modem, nothing else. Works just as i wanted and i highly recommend this unit as a backup device for similar functions. I am considering hooking one up to my home pc.

Can you adjust the alarm settings?

Yes, in the PowerChute software. A UPS that is connected to computers via the supplied USB cable can have their sensitivity settings adjusted, as well as specify what hours you want to disable the alarm, if desired.

How do you turn off the alarm?

Back-UPS Pro has a button on the front that can mute any audible alarm caused by an event.

How long will this UPS power my system when the power goes out?

Runtimes of any UPS will vary based on the amount of power required by your connected devices. The LCD screen on a Back-UPS Pro model will display the estimated runtime based on the current power load of products plugged into the UPS.

Is PowerChute software required to use this UPS? Will load-time and other data be visible on LCD without this software?

Back-UPS Pro can be used without PowerChute software, and the LCD screen will display the full array of info offered. PowerChute provides additional settings and data, including energy usage/cost rate, CO2 emissions rate, and history of power events.

Does this allow for monitoring of the UPS over a network?

You can monitor the status of the UPS via the PowerChute software when the USB data cable is attached. However, you cannot monitor remotely over a network. Please consider APC’s Smart-UPS with SmartConnect (i.e. SMT1500C) for remote monitoring.
