APC UPS Battery Replacement

I have re-written it based on what i have discovered. Hope it will help you if you have the problem i had. 5 stars for the battery, not so much for apc customer service. . I purchased it to replace the original battery in my br1500g ups. This ups, and its original battery, was placed in service in january, 2014. According to the test data sheet that came with it, the ups itself was tested on 9/9/2013, so it was manufactured sometime in 2013. I have 6 ups systems because we used to have a lot of brief power interruptions (not as many now, florida power and light has really improved their system, but we still have one or two brief interruptions every few months).

All ups units will need a battery eventually. My original battery lasted more than five years before the apc unit threw an alert. It took less time to install that it’s taking to write this review. The replacement shipped quickly after ordering, was packed very well, and arrived almost fully charged. My unit claims that the battery is hot-swappable but i didn’t try that. I powered down my equipment first. Bonus for you and the planet: apc has a free recycling program. I visited the website listed on the sheet, printed a label, packed the spent battery in the excellent packaging,and had the guy in the brown truck take it away.

Purchased the apcrbc124 replacement battery through amazon on 11-26-2017 (just as i had done back in 2014 when the unit indicated it required replacement, and the replacement worked without issue). This time this replacement failed self test from the start. I will give it a few hours to ‘charge’ before testing again just in case that may be the issue. Unit does indicate full charge but i hope it just needs a little top off time. If not i may look at another brand before deciding whether to replace the unit entirely or go through the hassle of trying to get a working replacement battery. I will update after a retest. ********update- 12-6-2017installed 12-4-2017 and failed the self test at install as stated above. I gave it a couple days of charge time and ran another self test on 12-6-2017. I really hope it lives up to the 3 years they claim it should last.

I purchased several rbc124 batteries in october & november 2016 when the price was reduced and they were the real thing. The rbc123 and rbc124 batteries are the same size and will fit a lot of the apc ups units. I have tested several of them and there is not as much difference in the ah capacity as the advertised numbers indicate. Be sure to reset the ‘replace battery date’ in powerchute especially if your ups is in the back-ups xs 1000(bx1000g) series. This series of ups units have a ‘power on self test’ that runs every time the unit is turned on and if the battery is not at full charge the battery will not pass the test. The ups then declares the battery bad and will not charge the battery. The ups will continue to operate but the internal ups electronics will completely discharge the battery and then start beeping. I purchased the rbc124 9ah batteries to replace the rbc123 7ah batteries that came in the back-ups xs 1000(bx1000g) upsunits in order to gain more run time and they were less expensive that day. As a battery ages, the amp hour capacity slowly reduces and that is why the actual runtime is different than the estimated runtime. Some of the batteries that i replaced actually tested at less that 4 amp hours and they still passed the battery self test.

So often what appears to be original manufacturer parts turns out to be a ‘compatible’ replacement. Nothing wrong with getting a compatible. Unless you want the actual original part. This appears to actually be from apc. It’s two 9ah 12v batteries will all the hardware so you just need to slide out the old battery and slide in the new one. The battery is charging now. No way to tell how old it is (batteries expire in a few years, so recently manufactured is much better than stock that has been on a shelf for a year or two. I’ll likely drop the old battery at home depot — they accept sealed lead acid batteries for recycle. You can also get a shipping label from apc and they will take your old batteries. It’s really bad to throw these batteries in the garbage.
