CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS System

I purchased a cp1500pfclcd ups about 2 weeks ago and i liked it so much i decided to get another unit for a different room in my house. Upon opening and setting up the unit that i received today, i at first thought it was the wrong model. When i checked the box and sticker affixed to the ups, i realized that it was the same model, but with an ‘a’ designation after the model number, so this was a cp1500pfclcda. Model isn’t even on cyberpower’s web site, so i’m not sure what’s going on, but i actually like this one better than my previous purchase. This new version has a 1,000 watt capacity versus the 900 watts of the non-‘a’ version. It also has 12 outlets, with six having battery backup, a full-color screen that’s adjustable, one usb 2. 0 port, one usb-c port and the ability to add an snmp card for remote monitoring. As you can see in the attached photos comparing the two units, the front panel buttons have been moved around a bit and renamed, but you can still modify important parameters and mute the alarms.

Worked fine for the first 2 years, but it failed while still under warranty. It started by going into a continuous beep on occasion, which could be stopped by resetting the unit, but soon the beeps happened more and more frequently until one day it just refused to do anything but the continuous beep even when reset. I was on hold for 25 minutes to reach tech support, and the tech immediately diagnosed the problem as a failed battery. He said it’s not uncommon at all, and all we had to do was replace the battery. The rma, however, requires me to send the entire unit back to them at my expense for exchange, and it says that then replacement will take 1-2 weeks. This is a *29 lb* ups — shipping is nearly $40. They know it’s a failed battery, and the dead battery is of no realistic use to them, so why not just send a replacement battery?. I feel that the only reason for this policy is to discourage people from actually *using* the warranty. They know that a replacement battery costs about the same as shipping, and that most people won’t want to wait 2-3 weeks (initial shipping to them plus return time) to have a functional ups yet again. Ideally, since they know it’s a failed battery, all they need to do is ship a replacement battery out — which amazon can do yet today with 2-day shipping, if i want, or i could get one at batteries plus yet today. I’m very much not impressed and will probably get my next ups from someone else.

I’ve owned this for seven years and i’ve bought two more like it in the years since then, most recently last week. Two are for my office and one for my personal computer. Two of them are 1500va and one is 1350va. The reason for buying a pure sine wave ups like this one is to work with the active pfc power supplies in most modern computers. I’ve had numerous power failures, but my pc’s on my cyberpower sinewave ups’s have always kept running. The battery in this unit (a 1500va) finally failed after just over six years. I replaced it earlier this year with a cyberpower rb1280x2b that i bought on amazon for $75, much less than the cost of replacing the ups. Replacing the battery (it’s actually two batteries linked together) was easy and fast. I’ve attached three screenshots of cyperpower software displays. They provide the current status, including how many watts you’re plugged-in devices are currently using and how many minutes they’ll keep running if the power goes out (at this moment for me it’s 46 minutes when i’m using 144 watts).

I owned this ups for about 5 years before it died. Pro:-great value for money, in terms of battery capacity, feature set, power factor correction, and total efficiency. -worked great for me for 4 solid years. -convenient usb ports for charging portable devices without occupying outlets. Con:-failed suddenly, unexpectedly, and not due to a battery fault. Unit was under idle load only at the time. -failure core f03 apparently means ‘warranty replacement only, do not attempt repair’-cyberpower support did not provide any additional information, resources, parts, or labor. They would not repair the unit even if i paid for it. -weird brownish-red goo near capacitors suggests that at least one capacitor has failed. Generally, replacing those caps is quick and cheap, and results in a fully operational unit.
