Toshiba (HDTB420XK3AA) Canvio Basics 2TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0, Black
I’m one of those people that take a million photos with my phone, and never do anything with them. The last time i bought a new phone and the customer service guy went to transfer all of my stuff to the new phone he freaked out because i had so many pictures. And that was a few years ago before i had my daughter so you can imagine the thousands more that have been added to the mix. Once i started getting a low memory notification from my phone i knew i needed to do something about it. I was also worried about the phone getting lost or stolen and losing all of them. I know they’re backed up on my google drive but i just wanted something tangible to be able to hold onto and put in a fireproof safe to know my photos are ok. I found this product that had good reviews, was price effective, and had enough space that i could put all of my photos. It wasn’t hard to use, basically just a plug and play situation. It did take a while to get my photos moved over since i had so many but i had no problem getting them saved over and there’s still plenty of room for many more. I purchased a case to keep this in and it’s stored somewhere safe.
I’ve been needing to upgrade my external backup solution for some time now. So when i saw this drive, i had to order it so i could retire my aging 500 gb external drive (which was also from toshiba)pros:-this drive has excellent read/write performance when compared with my old drive (crystaldiskmark images attached)-this drive was very easy to encrypt with windows bitlocker, only took a minute to encrypt it. -came with a new usb type a to microusb type b cable. Cons:-construction: the outer plastic body feels cheap and is flexible.
I like to show the size of something so i place it next to a regular deck of playing cards, it’s that small. But it holds the memory of bigger size external hard drives, it’s simple to use. Just plug into a usb port on your computer ,give it a minute to load up and thats it.Go to computer, look for your toshiba icon. . Drag your music or movies etc right in the box and it’s copied onto your new toshiba basics 1tb portable external hard drive. You can load thousands of pictures and music to it and have plenty of space left, i had not 1 problem with it and was set up and ready to go in less than 1 minute.
From the moment i got it, it constantly disconnected itself. At least 5x a week i was having to repair the device. Until one day it shut off and didn’t come back on again. Mind you, i purchased the device 1 month and 1 week ago. I have the 2 year data recovery which is a blessing. I’m having to contact toshiba to see if they can replace it under the manufacturer’s warranty i will update if there’s any resolve. Update: amazon was really helpful. Toshiba wasn’t answering their phones so we can see if i was under warranty. They were really understanding of my frustration and issued me a replacement.
I don’t have a lot to say about this, since it met every one of my expectations right out of the box. It needed no software, it was plug n play, it has enough room for all of my 15 years of photos (and believe me, i needed this space). Overall this operates just as it is described, and has saved me a lot of fumbling with flash drives that the pics were stored on previously. Now, my flash drives are filled with what they should have been filled with – work. And my pictures are in a safe and backed up place. And as an edit and update here. My last portable drive like this has about a quarter of the room of this one, and has no way of the user telling when it is being accessed. This toshiba external hard drive, is complete with a blue light that blinks (helpful to me especially as i may have 3-4 flash drives attached as well as this). But most important, the size is wonderful.
