Western Digital WD_ 1TB SN750 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD – Gen3 PCIe
I bought this new sn750 nvme drive to move my os from a crucial ssd. This drive is noticeably faster. Installation was easy, but i did have trouble cloning my os to this drive without corruption errors. I ended up backing up my pertinent files and fresh installing windows. Since the motherboard or cpu didn’t change, windows recognized my computer and i did not need to repurchase the os. That being said and really at no fault to the drive, everything else has gone smoothly. Pros:- the drive is fast: the box says read/writes up to 3400mb/s sequentially. However i’ve found mine, without any cache enhancements, to be about 2900mb/s. With ram caching of 4gb (which is what i typically use), read/writes came in about 8000mb/s.
Before going to far i’m an intermediate computer nerd. I can tinker, build, install and troubleshoot somewhat, installs and building are the easy part for me. All the computer jargan with speeds and yadda yadda doesnt really register with me until i research things and gain an understanding. Otherwise bought this for my higher end gigabyte ga z97mx gaming 5 mobo v1 from 2014, yes 2014 because the pc is still running great. I was running off an old western digital sata 1tb hd and that thing ran like a sloth, i forget may not even write at 7k and the disk usage was always at 100%. Fastforward 5 years i finally gave in and filled the m. 2 slot with this bad boy (250gig). Good news first i haven’t gamed with it yet but as for booting times and overall quickness i give it 4 thumbs up. My boot time has gone from 5min to about 30 seconds.
Was blazing fast boot time less than 4 seconds. Unfortunately failed within a week and sent back for replacement.
This is for the wd black sn750 1tb nvme. My asus mother board (prime z390-p) with windows 10 pro, had no trouble using the drive to its full ability, without any extra drivers or settings being done. I have always liked wd hard drives, i’m glad to see their solid state drives are nice as well. Note: the software for the drive is also nice. Small footprint and you can select it to not run unless you choose to. So no background processes running. The wd version of the software will also work on the sandisk drives.
I got this nvme because my normal sata ssd was getting pretty full, and because of how far ssd’s have come since i purchased my sata samsung evo 850 ssd. Ive seen some incorrect questions and replies regarding the ability to use an nvme ssd in some z97 boards and im here to tell you that you certainly can if your board has a built in m. 2 slot(m-key) and your bios was updated to allow you to do so. As i said, i have an asus z97-ar, which is the same as the z97-a but all black, and all it required for me to be able to boot from the nvme was for me to change some settings in the bios, now the default boot is the nvme and the backup is my old sata drive. A few years back asus pushed a bios update for (supposedly) all z97 and z99 boards to accept nvme ssd’s. That being said, my boards m. 0 x2, so i do not get the full speed of the nvme using the default slot, i get about 850mb/s read and 820mb/s write. This is still an improvement over the 550/500 using sata. And if your motherboard has a built in m.
